ABSTRACT
According to Richard Sennett, ‘sameness stultifies the mind, diversity stimulates and expands it’.[1] Diversity is crucial for a viable public life, which is why people still live in cities, next to strangers, and unexpected situations, as it expands the mind and makes life particularly rich and complex. Furthermore, when something is complex, it fails to fit into a category, categories such as race, social status and economic backgrounds. Therefore, it provides a good base for a multicultural mix. In the case of Footscray, the diversity of migrant and non-migrant ethnicity presses the issue of the search for a place in the world.
Does everyone have a place regardless of his or her ethnicity and socio- economic background?
